Tour Details
We flew into Dublin and drove to a beautiful house in County Sligo on the western shores of Ireland where guests were introduced to the true meaning of Halloween. We addressed the Iron Age era of Irish history with hands on learning about pottery designs with Halloween themes. We then were taken on a ghost tour of all things paranormal in Sligo. Steffen Jorgensen, a native to Sligo taught a course on all aspects of Halloween, the history of the ceremony, the meaning of Celtic spirituality and the modern aspects of the event. He talked about how the ceremony reflects the topics of death, rebirth and renewal. We went through a trance/ meditation journey examining the topics of Halloween and tried to contact our ancestors. We walked along a stoned flat forest path where we were introduced to natural types of incense and its uses. We traveled to the site of the ceremony and then had a Halloween feast. We visited Parkes Castle and then boarded the Rose of Innisfree and sailed across the great Gill lough. We saw the ancient 12th century Church of Killaspugbrone on the Coolera peninsula where we walked a across sand dunes to remember our ancestors. We visited a tradition Irish pub and heard traditional Irish music and enjoyed a pint of Guinness and a sampling of the Irish ‘Criac’ in a magical setting overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. We traveled to the Arigna Mines in County Roscommon where we took a tour exploring the conditions faced by miners in Ireland and also learned about tales of encounters with entities underground that did not have our best intentions at heart. We went to Lough Key and sites of various paranormal phenomena, including UFO’s. Following a picnic we walked through the picturesque forest to the Fairy Bridge. It is known that the fae could not cross running water and the bridge was built specially for them in a place known for all manner of strange activity. We went to Oweynagat - the Cave of the Cats and legendary home of Halloween, home of the mighty Morrigan and many more malicious mythical monsters, where you may face your fears and any demons that reside within! Those physically able descended through the narrow entrance and into the cave and into the muddy darkness to retrieve an item from its depths. We shopped in Sligo town and then traveled to the Hill of Ward for a torch lit procession from the Fair Green in Athboy, Co. Meath to the Hill of Tlachtga The group took part in the fire ceremony at this place known to be the birth place of Halloween. We took a tour of Sligo and Leitrim County on the trail of a monster. From its birth place, guests discovered there is more truth to this tale than meets the eye. Along the way with multiple stops, we appreciated the beauty and wildness of the west of Ireland which is rich in legends and myth and a photographers dream. We had a farewell show at the Hawkswell theatre. This was a perfect way to end the wonderful Halloween experience and say farewell to friends old and new.
