Tour Details
We flew into Edinburgh Airport and stayed in a large Mansion House. That night we sat in the drawing room listening to Barry Fitzgerald talk about the spiritual history of Scotland. We visited Edinburgh Castle a historic fortress that dominates the city's skyline, explored the Royal Mile, the main thoroughfare in Edinburgh, and then headed to the Edinburgh Vaults. The Vaults are a series of underground chambers used to house taverns, cobblers and other tradesmen, and as storage space for illicit material, reportedly including the bodies of people killed by serial killers Burke and Hare for medical experiments. Afterward we enjoyed a Taste of Scotland Dinner Show with bagpipes, fiddlers and dancing, not to mention traditional Scottish food. We visited Inchcolm Abbey built in 1235 and one of the best preserved groups of monastic buildings in Scotland. After a picnic lunch in Fife, we saw the remains of St. Andrews Cathedral and the ruins of St. Andrew Castle. We traveled to Drumnadrochit in the Scottish Highlands where we boarded a cruise of the world famous Loch Ness. We visited the impressive ruins of a 13th century stronghold Urquhart Castle which saw conflict throughout its 500 years as a medieval fortress. We made our way to Corrimony Chambered Cairns, one of the best preserved burial grounds in Britain. In Glasgow, we saw a large medieval castle sited on a high, steep bank, above a bend in the River Clyde. We visited the Southern Necropolis - "The City of the Dead" where we explored a cemetery built in 1840 that contains the remains of over 250,000 souls. We also visited the 12th century Glasgow Cathedral. We traveled to the magnificent Abbotsford, 200 year old home of Sir Walter Scott to the ruins of Melrose Abbey which is the burial place of Robert the Bruce's Heart. We went to Jedburgh Abbey, built in the middle ages and then to the Jedburgh Jail, featured on TV Show 'Most Haunted”. We visited Dunfermline Abbey, the resting place of King Robert the Bruce and the post-Iona burial site of the Kings and Queens of Scotland. We traveled down to Linlithgow to visit Blackness Castle. Then on to Stirling Castle which has its fair share of paranormal activity. There have been a few reported spirits at the castle. Staff and visitors have often seen apparitions wearing full traditional garb. Known as the highland ghost many have mistaken him for a tour guide only to have turn and vanish in front of their eyes. We finished the day at the14th Century Doune Castle.
